ARTIST STATEMENT/BIO

Leah Bartholomew’s artworks are an abstract representation of the beauty found in the landscape and life of her local environment. Her optimistic, colourful artworks are a response to her daily interactions with her local base, Coolangatta, QLD and Northern NSW. The ritual of daily walks play an integral part in forming the initial concepts for her pieces. Her vast paintings begin as small torn paper collages, an intuitive puzzle of unexpected colours and feelings that take shape based on the influences of her environment and mood. These collages may represent the colours of the weather, or how the warmth of the rocks on the beach felt, or the blinding brightness of an electric blue sky. The colour palette is carefully chosen in response to this and the paper collages then inform the large scale paintings. Each day is different and her affinity with the landscape provides endless material to respond to. Leah’s work is easily recognisable by her clean, bold style and sophisticated and unusual colour palette.

Leah Bartholomew is a practising artist and designer based in Coolangatta, QLD, Australia. She is represented by Julia Green of Greenhouse Interiors.  After a successful collaboration with Australian label, Gorman in 2013, Leah's signature style was recognised by a large audience. Stylist Jessica Hanson from Inside Out magazine commissioned Leah to do a mural for a children's playroom editorial. Belinda Kurtz of Petite Vintage Interiors then followed this up with another mural commission for a private client in Brisbane. Both projects brought her work into the spotlight. With a background in Fine Arts, textile design and graphic design, she is a multi-disciplined artist and designer. After living in Melbourne, working for well loved Australian designer Beci Orpin, plus a long list of clients while also being an exhibiting artist, she returned to her home town to establish her own homewares and art business 'Beneath The Sun’. Leah now concentrates on developing her art practice and designing her own products.

'Where The Dry Leaves Fall' was Leah's first solo exhibition in 2008 at Gorker Gallery in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Following the success of this exhibition there was a follow up solo show 'These Are The Days' in 2010. She has been part of group shows nationally. A successful collaboration with Australian label Gorman and being featured in The Design Files open house, saw Leah’s signature style reach a large audience and her art commissions are now in high demand.
